When to come

Peak color lands early-to-mid October

The Laurel Highlands put on one of the best fall shows on the East Coast — ridgelines of amber, orange, and deep red. The whole show runs about three weekends. Here is how each one plays.

Week 1 · Early October

Color arrives, Autumnfest opens

Peak color typically starts landing in early October, right as Autumnfest opens at the resort (first weekend of the month — Oct 3–4 in 2026) with live music, craft vendors, and chairlift rides over the turning canopy. These are the dates to book farthest ahead.

Week 2 · Mid October

The heart of peak — and peak demand

Mid October stacks the best color against the busiest calendar: another Autumnfest weekend, the Indigenous Peoples' long weekend (Oct 10–12 in 2026), and Fort Ligonier Days about 30 minutes away. If you want a peak-color Saturday, this is the one that goes first.

Week 3 · Late October

The quiet tail of the window

The 2026 color window runs to about October 25. Crowds thin, midweek rates ease, and the on-site Highlands course plays its last rounds of the season (golf runs through late October). The trade: you are betting on the back half of peak.

Exact peak shifts a week either way depending on the year — if you are set on color, book the window, not a single day.

The house in fall

Cozy is the point

Fall is when Mountain Haven is at its best for slowing down: crisp mornings, a cook-in kitchen, and the hot tub under a clear, cold sky after a day on the trails. The pool closes after Labor Day — everything that makes the house worth gathering in is still here, and the views out the back get better by the week.

  • Private hot tub on the deck — open year-round, best on a cold October night
  • Floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and a wet bar for the after-hike hours
  • Sleeps 16+ across 4 bedrooms and 4 full bathrooms — bring both families
  • Full kitchen for cooking in, and the free resort shuttle picks up near the door
