The long table

A kitchen for the real dinner, and room for everyone who comes to it

Thanksgiving at a restaurant is a reservation. Thanksgiving here is the whole day: the turkey going in mid-morning, the cousins up in the bunk loft, someone on dishes, someone on the wet bar, and the long, slow evening that only happens when nobody has to drive home after pie.

The kitchen is a full gourmet kitchen stocked with cookware and dishes for 16+, so you bring the food and the family recipes, not a carload of pots and pans. Questions about the oven or how many chairs fit around the table? Ask when you book and we’ll tell you.

  • Full gourmet kitchen — cookware and dishes for 16+
  • Full-size fridge, dishwasher, microwave and toaster oven
  • Coffee maker and a Keurig for the early risers
  • Wet bar for the pre-dinner crowd, big-screen TVs for the game
  • 3 bedrooms, a den with its own door, and a 6-bunk loft for the kids

Thanksgiving weekend, planned

Four nights, one easy plan

Arrive Wednesday, cook Thursday, pick your outing Friday and Saturday, and head home Sunday. Everything below was checked against this year’s published schedules.

  1. Wednesday

    Nov 25

Shop on the way in, hot tub by dark

Do the big grocery run before you drive up — at home, or at the Giant Eagle or Walmart in Somerset, about 30 minutes from the house — and let Highlands Market, under a mile from the resort’s main gate, cover the forgotten-cranberries emergency. Unpack, get the turkey in the fridge, and let the first night be easy.

Walmart is closed on Thanksgiving Day this year, and Giant Eagle has closed its supermarkets on Thanksgiving in recent years. Wednesday is the day.

  2. Thursday

    Nov 26 · Thanksgiving

Turkey trot, a short walk, the long table

Runners can make the Greensburg Thanksgiving Turkey Trot (a 5K at 9 a.m., about 50 minutes away) or the Latrobe Turkey Trot (about 40 minutes). Everyone else: a gentle walk at Kooser State Park, 10 minutes from the house, before the oven needs you. Then dinner, then pie, then the hot tub.

The sun sets just before 5 p.m., so take the walk before dinner, not after.

  3. Friday

    Nov 27

    Leftovers, then lights

Fallingwater (closed Thanksgiving Day) and Kentuck Knob are both open Friday — book the tour ahead. After dark, Overly’s Country Christmas near Greensburg (about 50 minutes) reopens after its Thanksgiving-week break, and Nemacolin, down in Farmington, holds its Light Up Nemacolin evening.

Nemacolin notes that many of its experiences are for overnight guests and members — call before you drive.

  4. Saturday

    Nov 28

Small Business Saturday and Light Up Somerset

Spend the day shopping the 60-plus shops around Ligonier’s Diamond (about 40 minutes) for Small Business Saturday, then finish in Uptown Somerset for Light Up Somerset, from 5 p.m. — the Christkindl market, fresh kettle corn and the whole uptown under lights.

Saturday is also the opening day of Pennsylvania’s rifle deer season. If you hike, wear blaze orange — see the notes below.

  5. Sunday

    Nov 29

    One more breakfast, then home

Turkey-hash breakfast for sixteen, one last soak, and an hour’s drive back to Pittsburgh. Kentuck Knob keeps its daily November hours through today if you want one more stop on the way out.

Kids' bunk loft sleeps the whole crew

The weekend before

Friendsgiving, Nov 20–22

Family Thanksgiving is at home on Thursday? Give the friends their own weekend first. Friday to Sunday the week before plays the same way: everyone brings a dish, the kitchen handles sixteen plates, and the bunk loft takes whoever loses the coin toss.

Overly’s Country Christmas, about 50 minutes away near Greensburg, opens its 2026 season on Thursday, Nov 19 — so the lights are on that weekend, before Overly’s closes again for Thanksgiving week.

  • Fri Nov 20 → Sun Nov 22, two nights
  • Potluck-sized kitchen, dishes for 16+
  • Hot tub on the deck after dinner
  • Pennsylvania’s bear season opens Saturday the 21st — orange on the trails

Local knowledge

What to know before you go

Late November in the Laurel Highlands means hunting season, short daylight and holiday store closures. None of it gets in the way if you plan for it.

It’s hunting season — wear orange

Pennsylvania’s bear firearms season runs Nov 21–24 and rifle deer season opens Saturday, Nov 28, running through Dec 13 with Sundays included. On any woods walk, wear blaze orange you can see from every side, keep dogs in an orange vest or collar, and skip dawn and dusk, when hunters are most active.

Where to walk

Kooser State Park, 10 minutes from the house, does not allow hunting at all — its easy Tree Army Trail follows Kooser Run for half a mile. Larger parks like Laurel Hill and Ohiopyle allow hunting across much of their land, so stay on marked trails there. On state game lands, orange is the law for every visitor, Oct 1 through Jan 31.

Groceries and the holiday

Shop Wednesday. Walmart in Somerset is closed on Thanksgiving Day, and Giant Eagle has closed its supermarkets on the holiday in recent years. Highlands Market near the resort gate and Sarnelli’s Market in Jones Mills (beer, wine and a deli, about 10 minutes) are the close-in backups — check their holiday hours before you count on them.

Short days, cold nights

The sun is down before 5 p.m. Thanksgiving week, and it’s a mountain, so bring a warm layer for the deck. The private hot tub runs year-round, and late November is when it earns its keep.

Good to know

Thanksgiving questions, answered

Is Seven Springs open on Thanksgiving? Can we ski?+

Not for skiing, usually: Seven Springs opened for skiing in early December in both of the last two seasons, and the 2026–27 opening date had not been announced when we wrote this. The resort does list a Thanksgiving Day buffet on Nov 26 — reserve through 7springs.com if you’d rather not cook. If skiing is the point, look at the weeks before Christmas instead.

Is this a good Thanksgiving cabin rental near Pittsburgh?+

That is exactly what it’s for. Mountain Haven is about an hour from Pittsburgh on the resort at Seven Springs, so a Wednesday arrival after work is easy and nobody spends the holiday on the turnpike. It sleeps 16+ across 3 bedrooms, a den and a bunk loft, with 3 full and 2 half baths, a full kitchen and a private hot tub.

We need a large house rental for Thanksgiving in PA. How many does it sleep?+

Sixteen-plus: two king bedrooms, a third bedroom with two doubles, a den with a sleeper sofa and its own door, and a bunk loft that sleeps six. Three full baths and two half baths keep Thanksgiving morning moving. It’s 2,400+ square feet, built for a group this size.

Can we cook a full Thanksgiving dinner in the house?+

Yes. The full gourmet kitchen has cookware and dishes for 16+, a full-size fridge, a dishwasher, a microwave, a toaster oven and both a coffee maker and a Keurig. If you need specifics — oven size, roasting pan, how many seats at the table — ask when you book and we will answer before you shop.

Will the grocery stores be open on Thanksgiving Day?+

Plan on no. Walmart is closed on Thanksgiving Day this year, and Giant Eagle has closed its supermarkets on the holiday in recent years. Do the big shop by Wednesday — at home before you drive up, or at the Somerset stores about 30 minutes from the house — and let Highlands Market near the resort gate cover last-minute gaps.

Is it safe to hike Thanksgiving weekend? What about hunting season?+

Yes, with orange on. Bear season runs Nov 21–24 and rifle deer season opens Saturday, Nov 28, so hunters are in the woods all week. Wear blaze orange visible from every side, put an orange vest on the dog, avoid dawn and dusk, and stay on marked trails. Kooser State Park, ten minutes away, prohibits hunting entirely — it’s the easy pick for a holiday walk.

Can we book the weekend before for Friendsgiving?+

Yes — Friday, Nov 20 to Sunday, Nov 22 works well for a Friendsgiving weekend, and Overly’s Country Christmas is already open by then. Open the calendar on those dates to see live availability.

How do we get the best rate?+

Book direct on this site and skip the Airbnb guest fees (about 14%). The suggested Wednesday-to-Sunday stay opens the booking calendar with the dates already filled in, so you can see live availability in one click.
