Pre-season

Opening day is set for early December, weather permitting

The 2026–27 ski season is set to open on Fri, Dec 4, 37 days from today. That’s the first day on the slopes listed by the resort, weather permitting, since opening day depends on cold enough nights for snowmaking. Seven Springs opened on December 6 in each of the last two seasons.

Snowmaking weather

Is it cold enough to make snow?

Snow guns spray water that has to freeze before it lands, and evaporation does much of that cooling. So the number that matters is the wet-bulb temperature, which blends the air temperature with how dry the air is. Dry air at 30°F can be snowmaking weather; damp air at 30°F usually isn’t.

Not cold enough to make snow in the next 3 days.

The coldest hour is around 8 a.m. Saturday, at about a 37°F wet-bulb. That’s 9 degrees too warm, since snow guns need about 28°F or colder.

For a sense of timing: last fall, the Hidden Valley station’s first morning at 28°F or colder was November 10, 2025, and the resort opened December 6.

A weather-based estimate, not the resort’s snowmaking schedule. Seven Springs decides when and where to run its guns from its own on-mountain readings, water supply and crews. For what’s actually happening on the hill, see the Seven Springs snow report.

Wet-bulb is computed hour by hour from the NWS hourly forecast’s temperature and relative humidity for the house’s 2.5 km grid square (about 2,500 ft), using Stull’s 2011 formula. Thresholds match our snow dashboard: 28°F wet-bulb or colder means snowmaking is possible; 20°F or colder is prime. NWS hourly forecast updated 8:05 PM EDT.

Good to know

Seven Springs conditions, answered

Is Seven Springs open today?+

Only the resort can tell you that. Seven Springs posts which lifts and trails are running on its Lift & Terrain Status page at 7springs.com. This page is an independent guide to the weather and snow around the mountain; it isn’t affiliated with Seven Springs Mountain Resort or Vail Resorts.

How cold does it have to be to make snow at Seven Springs?+

Snowmaking depends on the wet-bulb temperature, which combines air temperature and humidity. As a rule of thumb, snow guns can start making snow around a 28°F wet-bulb, and they make it fastest and driest at about 20°F and below. In dry air that can happen with the thermometer near freezing; in damp air it takes colder temperatures. The resort decides when to run its system.

How much snow is on the ground at Seven Springs?+

For natural snow, the closest daily measurement is the National Weather Service cooperative station at Hidden Valley, 2,867 feet up and about 2½ miles from the house; its latest morning report is shown on this page. The resort’s base depth on the slopes is a different number, because snowmaking builds it, and Seven Springs publishes it in its snow report.

When does Seven Springs usually open for skiing?+

Early December in most years: the resort opened on December 6 in both 2024 and 2025. For 2026–27, Seven Springs lists Friday, December 4 as its first day on the slopes, weather permitting. The real date depends mostly on getting enough cold nights for the snowmakers to build a base.

Staying on the mountain?

Wake up on the mountain, not an hour away

Mountain Haven is a whole house at Mt. Villas, on the resort property. It sleeps 16+ across 3 bedrooms, a den and a bunk loft, with a private hot tub on the deck. It isn’t ski-in/ski-out: the free resort shuttle stops at Mt. Villas and runs to the lifts.

Sunday-to-Thursday stays are the quiet way to catch early-season snow.
